My father doesn't realize how short life is. Unfortunately he thinks when interacting with my children, he can speak to them and treat them the same way he did with me.

Amen and this post really struck a chord with me. Luckily my daughter is too young to realize it but her grandfather has never been to ONE of her functions.. Dance recitals, birthdays (x7), the christening or even the birth.
I want to tell him "you know how lonely old men get that way? by making the choices every day that you do now"..
